 Holy Magic

Strasbourg, 1518. A woman named Frau Troffea begins to dance in the street. Her movements are controlled, she chooses to dance. She dances on and on before collapsing from exhaustion. And then her dance recommences.

Soon others begin to dance. They too dance on and on. The authorities encourage them, building a stage and hiring musicians, believing they will dance themselves free from contagion. They do not. Instead they dance to the point of exhaustion and even death.

Holy Magic is a solo performance about group behaviour. It asks the question: How can one person influence the behaviour of a group? The performance explores Medieval dancing plagues, 1990s rave culture and ritualistic mysticism.
